Specialist services

Direct evidence, e.g. randomised or cohort studies, for the cost-benefit of provision of other specialist services is limited. However the following exist:

  • Perinatal mental health services (supported by NICE)84
  • Eating disorder services:
    • especially important where these disorders are life-threatening85
    • inpatient units have an important but limited role in comparison to community management86
  • ‘Borderline personality disorder’ services (recommended in each Trust by NICE26)
  • Mood disorders clinics87
  • Psychosis specialist services
  • Services for specific groups, e.g. hearing impaired, autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
