Use reliable sources of information to understand at risk groups

Questions to consider and actions to undertake:

  • For example, use Read Codes (a set of codes given to clinical terms that helps clinicians record patient findings and procedures across GP surgeries and hospitals in the UK).
  • Specific sections of the population who may be at risk include ‘first degree relatives’ (parents, siblings, children) of people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and children/adolescents with with mental states that put them at risk of developing a mental illness.
  • Write a ‘primary prevention strategy’ (ie: a plan to reduce or prevent factors that put an individual at risk in the first place) with the local mental health trust / CAMH (Children and Adult Mental Health Service).
